Yes, it’s Possible to Keep your Motorcycle (Somewhat) Secure

motorcycle security

For most bikers, motorcycle security is one of the things that elicit the most number of nightmares. Forget the fact that motorcycles are some of the deadliest forms of transportation that can be found out there, or that thousands of people die each year in motorcycle accidents; bikers are, by and large, terrified about the prospect of having two or more burly men lift their prized possession into the back of a pickup truck before speeding away, movie style.

How can you secure your bike?

Securing your bike is, however, not a matter of guesswork. There are a number of steps that you can take to protect your motorcycle from the unwanted hands of nefarious marauders;

  1. Keep your bike covered or in a garage

The first thing that you need to understand, as far as motorcycle security is concerned, is that most of the thieves that are out there are opportunists, for whom temptation is usually the greatest vice.

What you need to do, therefore, is ensure that you do not lead these people into temptation. And how, you may ask, can you do that? Well, how about by making sure that they do not actually see your most priced of possessions.

While you may be tempted to brag by placing that newly acquired Harley Davidson in the most obvious of places so that the neighbors can gawk and drool, doing so is hardly advisable. It is much better, for your peace of mind, to store your motorcycle in your garage or, if you do not have one, to buy a tarp that you can throw over it.

You can also reduce the temptation through a sleigh of hand of your own. You can, as an example, place a cover for a less expensive model on your million dollar bike.

  1. Use your bike’s steering lock

Almost all bikes come with steering locks, and you should make sure that yours is engaged before leaving your motorcycle on its lonesome self. If you do not know how to engage the steering lock, feel free to check out the video below;

Needless to say here that steering locks are not infallible. Research indicates that a determined thief (or even one who is not that determined), can use brute force to defeat the steering lock on a motorcycle.

  1. Padlock it

This is something that you should do if you are really determined to secure your motorcycle. Say, as an example, that you live in a high risk area. Although the steering lock may act as a deterrent for would be thieves, they can still easily steal your motorcycle by foisting it onto a truck.

Not so, if you also have it locked down using a cable. Indeed, this is something that you can do even if you keep your bike inside a garage. What you need to do in order to make this effective is find some place where you can bolt your bike into place. Of course, determined thieves will always come with bolt cutters, but bike cable locks add another layer of security as you hunt for the best way through which you can secure your beloved motorcycle.

  1. Use more than one lock

You may have already noticed that we are talking about using the various motorcycle security measures that we mention here in an incremental fashion. Thieves are, for the most part, on the hunt for easy pickings. They are, therefore, not going to stick around to be bludgeoned by some angry owners while trying to unravel one security puzzle or the other.

You should, therefore, make sure that you use more than one security protocol on your motorcycle. Why not, as an example, use your bike’s steering lock, alongside a bike lock cable or even two? The moment the would be bike thieves encounter a problem, they are more than likely to scuttle out of there as if their very lives depend on it.

  1. Motorcycle Alarms

This is one of the most effective ways through which you can secure your motorcycle. Again, it all boils down to the fact that thieves are, by their very nature, given to being discreet. No bike thief is going to wait around to be caught while an alarm is wailing angrily nearby.

Some of the bikes that are out there come with OEM alarm systems. If yours does not have one, adding one can be as easy as heading over to Amazon or eBay. Needless to say here that some of the bike alarms that are out there are rather puny, making it imperative for you to make sure that the one that you get is up to the task of scaring away would be criminals.

  1. Get an Immobilizer

An immobilizer is another great way through which you can keep your motorcycle safe. This is another thing that you can get cheaply off eBay. Needless to say here, however, that an immobilizer is hardly going to be of use if the thieves use brute force and cart off your bike, as we have already noted, in the back of a pickup truck.
